Class Connect Sessions
Homeroom
Homerooms will be Mondays at 11:00am for all fifth graders.
Homeroom time is a time for the students to interact with each other, and also to be introduced to the next week's Study Island Pathways, plus important announcements are given at this time.
Synchronous Whole Group Sessions
There will be synchronous whole group class connects over the Online Curriculum (OLS), for Math and Reading each week, introducing that week's topics and providing extra help. These classes could be with your homeroom teacher or with other 5th grade teachers, as we co-teach frequently! It will be very important and mandatory for your student to attend their necessary class connects. If a student is going to miss, the learning coach does need to call or kmail their homeroom teacher and let her know. In that case, the child will have the opportunity to view the recording. Also, depending on the week, there will be whole group over History or Science (alternating weeks). These classes will include the entire 5th grade and will be with the 5th grade teachers.
Small Groups
Depending on need, your homeroom teacher will set up small groups based off topics and units from the OLS. If you have any that you are struggling with, let your teacher know and a "help" session can be set up for you!
Study Island Class Connects
Class Connect sessions for Math and Reading SI topics will be created, recorded, and sent out weekly to help the students on their SI topics due that week. Small groups will be created as needed for students needing extra help. We will hold monthly SI parties, to celebrate students finishing their topics due, hold gift card drawings, and a LOT of fun activities!
Writing Workshop Class Connect Sessions
We are using the Common Core writing standards this year at MVCA plus 6+1 traits.
We will be requiring students to kmail their rough drafts of their writings to their homeroom teacher monthly, to which the homeroom teacher will look it over and send back suggestions. Then the student will make revisions and kmail their final draft, and each one will be graded. There will be THREE main writing sample goals to work on: narrative, informative, and persuasive. Writing samples will all be turned in through Study Island or Moby Max. This is the best way for papers to be passed back and forth between the student and teacher. It is required that students complete these writing samples. MVCA teachers use 6+1 writing rubrics when grading writing.
Health
5th graders will be working on health this year. We will send out the agenda to learning coaches ahead of time so you know what will be covered, but we won't touch on any of the "controversial" topics, as we will leave those up to the families to discuss. Health will be provided via video, that the student will watch and then mark attendance under Health.
