Understanding the OLS 5th grade Grading Weights for 2014-2015
Hello 5th grade families!
Below is a wonderful resource for you to follow to help you understand how your student's grades are calculated and how you can make the most of your child's education! You will notice that class attendance and participation, writing samples, OLS progress and mandatory testing participation are all a part of how grades are calculated. Please know that you are always welcome to reach out to your homeroom teacher if you have any questions about how your child is performing. Progress reports and report cards will also be sent out periodically so you always know where your student is doing!
For Writing: The writing process this year will really be a tag-team between teachers, students and Learning Coaches. Teachers will hold mandatory writing sessions at least once a week where general writing instruction will take place. We will be grading all assignments and giving feedback to your student for each writing assignment. It is also vitally important that Learning Coaches are looking over their student's writing as they are going through the writing process, making sure to encourage good writing habits and reinforcing high expectations. I would also suggest sitting with your student during writing class connects, if possible, so that you are also aware of the expectations for each assignment and to reinforce your own writing knowledge! We know that this may not always be possible so it is the student's responsibility to make sure these expectations are being followed. In addition, we will be communicating all writing expectations via k-mail as well as in class to make sure there is no confusion and to be available to answer any questions that may come up. Writing is very important for students to become proficient, so this is an area we will be working hard on all year!
For Technology, Health and PE: these are courses that you only enter attendance hours for; there are NO set lessons for these courses. If you need some great ideas on what can be used for PE, Health and Technology, just ask!
Remember: educational outings, sports, computer classes or games, and much more can count towards PE or Technology!
We hope this pacing guide helps! Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions or concerns!
Sincerely,
The 5th grade Team
